During the week Kevin learned the techniques required to properly frame artwork to "Conversation" standards. There are many elements that go into conservation framing. - Glass: There are many different types of glass available to cover your art. These include regular glass, non-glare, anti-reflective, and museum glass. All these types of glass come in either non-conservation or conservation grades, Conservation grade glass has an ultra violet light inhibitor (up to 97% blocking factor) to protect your art.
- Matting: There are three basic grades of mat board available.
- First is the basic grade of matting made from wood pulp. This grade will yellow with age and has not been PH balanced for art preservation.
- Preservation or Conservation grade. This grade is what we use and is PH balanced for artwork With this grade the backing and the core of the mat have been manufactured to be neutral while the lop layer (coloured part of the mat) may or may not be PH balanced.
- Reg Mat. This is your top line of mat, Every single pal of the mat is PH balanced and is excepted at the museum level. We also use those on a regular basis.
- Frame: From one frame to the next there is very little difference in regard$ to conservation. However the depth of the frame does make a difference. Any artwork or photograph that has gives on it requires an airspace between the art and the glass. In fed the more space the better, Changing temperatures can create condensation under the glass, and if the artwork is touching the glass the more likely it could be damaged. Also as your frame is sealed the glass tends to increase the temperature behind the glass also possibly affecting the artwork.
If you have any questions regarding framing, or would like to book an appointment with Kevin to either talk, or to frame something, place of artwork, clothing, wedding Invitation, or familly photographs please do not hesitate to call.
